If you are unsure what to do with cremated remains in Japan, or if there may be no one to maintain a family grave in the future, you are welcome to speak with Ikkeji Temple.
Japanese and non-Japanese applicants receive the same services, conditions, and fees. You may write to us in English. We may use translation tools so that we can understand one another carefully.
A place to begin
You can contact us while you are still comparing options, closing a family grave, keeping an urn at home, or trying to understand Japanese burial customs. People of any religion or no religious affiliation may apply. Memorial care is conducted by Ikkeji as a Buddhist temple.
Eitai kuyo
JPY 300,000 per person
This shared memorial grave is for the resident priest and the people cared for by the temple. The deceased person's name is engraved and remains as part of the memorial.
Jumokuso
JPY 100,000 per person
The temple provides the same perpetual memorial care as above, but the deceased person's name is not engraved or otherwise retained at the grave.
Sankotsu
JPY 100,000 per person
The priest offers Buddhist prayers and scatters the cremated remains at sea by boat. The deceased is recorded in the temple's memorial register and receives care based on the temple's perpetual memorial practice.
A place for prayer after applying
After applying for perpetual memorial care, tree burial, or ash scattering at sea, family members may visit this prayer space to offer incense or recite sutras.
Memorial tablets for people receiving perpetual memorial care can be kept by the temple at no additional charge.
Remains outside Japan
Depending on the country of origin and the carrier, we may be able to accept cremated remains sent from outside Japan. Please contact us before arranging shipment.
For remains already in Japan, we also accept consultations about visiting the temple or sending them domestically. Please contact us before any shipment so that we can confirm the required documents and safe method.
